We Canadians want something done about unsolicited telemarketing phone calls.
Ever heard of Erin Brockovich? The amount of work she put in to bring down the hammer on an offending company is what I am willing to put in to bring down the telemarketing industry.
How many times have you been woken up by someone calling you to ask if you want to subscribe to or buy their product? How about being interrupted during dinner time? The worst is yet to come. Now some businesses are hiring marketing companies to pre-record an advertisment and send it directly to your voicemail without the phone even ringing!
These annoying calls affect many people. Sure, there are products out there that you can buy to intercept these unsolicited, bothersome calls, but should we have to PAY to regain privacy on our telephone lines?!
You (the CRTC) have prohibited the use of an automatic dialing-announcing device (ADAD) for "unsolicited calls for the purpose of solicitation, defined as the selling or promoting of a product or service, or the soliciting of money or money's worth, whether directly or indirectly and whether on behalf of the ADAD user or of another party," leaving it "acceptable" for cold calls dialed manually and junk faxes.
We want it taken a step further -- we want ALL of these unsolicited telephone calls to our homes STOPPED. It is a possible feat; for example, legislation was introduced in the UK in 1999, making it "unlawful to make unsolicited direct marketing calls to individuals who have indicated that they do not want to receive such calls."
Listed are fellow citizens who feel the same way. Please do something about this.
Thank you,
