History is history. Truth is truth. People are still those people. We are still Chinese. History cannot be forgotten.
“There was pride, respect, sadness, appreciation and even a touch of awe yesterday in speeches about the contribution of Chinese rail workers to the building of Canada.”(July 2 Toronto Star)
The hundreds of people present at yesterday's Canada Day ceremony heard how Chinese rail workers paid a dreadful price for construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway, which united Canada geographically and politically in the late 19th century.
British Columbia had agreed in 1871 to join Canada if a railway was built to link it with the rest of the country. Nine years later, nothing had been done and B.C. threatened to join the U.S. Something had to be done, fast, to keep Canada together.
So the federal government turned to famine-ravaged China to find workers who would do the dangerous job of railway building cheaply.
The workers suffered loneliness, long hours and racism.
Once the railway was completed in 1885, a punitive head tax was imposed to cut off further Chinese immigration.
On July 1, 1923 — known as Humiliation Day in the Chinese community — all immigration from China was banned, except for diplomats, wealthy merchants and students.
Pon said Canada Day is a time for appreciation, not bitterness.
"What can you do?" he asked. "It was better than living in China at that time. China was poor at that time."
