Toronto police are on the hunt for suspects after a teenager visiting the city was dragged from a motel room and sexually assaulted by up to eight men.
"She was dragged out of there at gunpoint," said Detective Paul Worden of Toronto's sex crimes unit. "It was pretty clear ... that they wanted this girl and what was going to happen."
Three men broke into the 18-year-old's room at the Montoro Motel - which police say is a notorious haven for drug users and prostitutes - just after 5 a.m. Tuesday while she and two friends were sleeping.
Wielding a gun, one of them demanded the teenager come back to his room, while her friends "were threatened not to do anything about what they were seeing."
The teen was dragged across the motel courtyard to another suite. There, she was allegedly sexually assaulted by at least eight men in the half-hour it took for police to arrive, Worden said.
The victim's friends rushed to a pay phone and called 911 once the attackers had left their suite. Five men and the victim were still in the suite when police arrived. Two were later released for lack of evidence.
The girl was treated in a hospital and has been released.
Her identity is protected by a publication ban, but police said she and her friends, a 29-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man, are from eastern Ontario.
The trio travelled to Toronto for the holiday weekend by bus, arriving at their motel on Friday afternoon. On Monday, they befriended some of the men.
Police said the two groups hung out together until just after midnight, when the three friends retired for the night.
Several hours later, though, the men returned to their room.
Although the gun hasn't been recovered, police say the older man used it to threaten the victim. He is also charged with stealing items from her room.
Devon Minott, 43, Kayan Vadivelu, 21, and Thineshkumar Nagarajah, 22, all of Toronto, have been charged with gang sexual assault and forcible confinement. They face a bail hearing today.
Worden said four other men will likely be arrested next week.
